    Discriminative models, also referred to as conditional models or backward models, are a class of supervised machine learning used for classification or distinguish decision boundaries by inferring knowledge from observed data. This is different to the idea of generative or forward models, and discriminative models make fewer assumptions about the underlying . We compare the two different methods in the context of hidden Markov modeling for speech recognition. We show the superiority of the discriminative method over the distribution estimation method by citing the results of several key speech recognition experiments.
